Jack pines are Michigan’s most tolerant conifer of dry, sandy soils. Jack pines have stiff, yellow/green needles bundled in sets of twos. This species is used for timber as well as reforestation and erosion control. However, arguably, its most important job is to act as a habitat for wildlife. For example, Jack pine stands are also the only place where Kirtland’s warblers, an endangered bird species, will breed. Jack pine grows relatively slowly and is not considered to be deer-resistant.
